Yes I have written two children's books about a child/student with Down Syndrome. For two years I worked as a one on one special assistant with a Down Syndrome child. I based my stories off of this real life child. The first book "Mighty Max", I paid for publishing at booksurgepublishing. The second book "Mighty Max", Max goes to summer camp. is at the illustration stage. I really don't want to have to pay for publishing again. Can someone point me into the direction of some publishing companies that might be interested in the subject that I have written about.

thanks, I emailed a lady from the website, the only problem I see is I was reading over their submissions page and they state that they don't like books that the main character whom has a disability relate to other characters that don't, my book is about a down syndrome student in an inclusion setting and how he copes with other students without disabilities, to me it is not reality if you have a book about a child with down syndrome hanging out with other students with down syndrome but I guess that is their submission guidelines.

I was going to say woodbine house too, but they're tough to get into. All you can do is go to the publishers guides and do extensive research. They do exist. Another idea is to locate special needs books and look in the cover to see who published it. Most of the publishers who do are educational publishers. Good luck!

Hey, Mighty Max...

There's a great article in a Children's Writer from a couple of months ago...it's around here somewhere...

when I dig it out from under my NaNo notes, I'll post another message. It's about writing for and publishing in Special Needs Markets.

Thanks for your patience and understanding of my ADHD and inability to keep my Children's Writers all in one spot.

No thanks

No thanks for the offer, I am trying to get picked up by a traditional publisher. Trying to stay away from paying for publishing services.

I'd like to see it too. My daughter is Downs Syndrome and I love reading stories that contain that. :)

My first job (while in college) was working at a home with six Downs Syndrome children. I loved them all. I always say that God was preparing me for later because five years later, I got one of my own. I wouldn't trade her for anything.

rejection

Well received my first rejection today, Running Press Kids Publishing. Nice letter, but would of been better if the letter was headed to my name, but oh well.

When you say "nice letter", was there any reason for the rejection or critique or praise given? Anything personalized?

They said they appreciated the time and effort you have put into your work and were glad for the opportunity to review it. We realize you have gone out of your way to create something fresh and engaging, two qualities we look for when considering new projects.

Unfortunately, we are only publishing a small number of picture books at this time, and your project does not fit our current publishing needs.

No personalized sentences or even Dear my name, it was Dear Author. well anyways

Neat! My mom has a similar story-- she was working at a summer camp for kids with disabilities because her friend's brother had Downs and they thought it would be fun to be counselors in his camp. About 8 years later is when she had my brother, so it wasn't a shock for her. My dad took it pretty hard, but now? I think we all know our lives would be total sewage without him. He's the coolest person in the world and makes all of us better people, too, just by soaking in his coolness. ;)
