Here's an idea for an alternative history that's been rolling around in my head for a while. But certain events have shown me that I will never have time to write it, so I thought I'd toss it out and see if someone thinks its a fun thing they'd like to write. I want to make it clear that I will never be able to write it, and by suggesting it here, I waive all rights to it.

So go back to the turn of the nineteenth century. Napolean does not sell Louisiana to the Americans. Following his defeat at Waterloo, he hightails it for New Orleans. He sets up a new government somewhere along the Mississippi, and comes into conflict with the United States. He could populate his land with expat French citizens, befriending native American tribes and by offering amnesty to any runaway slaves. He could make some fortuitous discoveries such as the diamond deposits at Crater of Diamonds in Arkansas. Also it would be likely that he would try to reunite with French Canada. Sounds like a fun situation for anyone interested in doing an alternative history.

Sounds like an interesting idea.

Just some random thoughts:

a) Between 1803 and 1815 the British would most likely have blockaded and raided the Louisiana coast. After the defeat of the French Navy at Trafalgar in 1805 there would have been little to stop the Royal Navy launching amphibious raids. This was done against Buenos Aires in 1806 (unsuccessfully) so the capacity to operate far from home was there.

b) The British would no doubt have considered operations against Napoleon in Louisiana. Although their policy towards America (especially after the War of 1812) would have to be researched.

c) Napoleon would also have clashed with the Spanish, whose homeland he had invaded in 1808.

d) Napoleon died from stomach cancer in 1821 so you would only have a limited window.

This does sound like the sort of thing I would read.

Of course, it your moving Napolean a continent away, you might also remove the agent that caused the cancer. A little gris gris magic could do much.

It would really be a great exercise in leadership for him. Balancing the Americans, the English, the Spanish and perhaps the French, but I imagine that if he did that, the French would be so devastated, that they wouldn't be in a strong position.

If he used Indian leaders who hated the Americans, he might be able to do a series of successful guerilla operations against his enemies. He'd be a fool to put his HQ in New Orleans of course, though it would be an important city.

There is some evidence that Napoleon was suffering from an internal complaint in 1815. Napoleon's father died from stomach cancer as well so it could have been hereditary.

But this is alternative history so you can have things happen which didn't.
