When I was researching whether to address my cover letter for a short story submission to The Southern Review to "Ms." or "Mrs." Jeanne Leiby (editor since 2008, I believe), a Google search revealed to my great surprise that she died in a car accident less than 2 weeks ago (RIP). There is no mention of it on the magazine's website and I can't find any discussion of it elsewhere through a Google search, so I wanted to post here to see if anyone had heard anything about this, or if anyone had any input on protocol in situations like this. Should I simply address my submission to "Dear Editor," or to the assistant editor (Jessica Faust-Spitzfaden), or should I withhold submission until LSU addresses the situation publicly? Seems like something of this nature could put the publication in considerable short-term turmoil. I feel terrible to come across this news (she was only 46), but it does not diminish my desire to submit to such a respected journal that offers professional rates, and I don't know if the lack of mention on the website indicates they prefer to go on operating in spite of this unfortunate occurrence. Opinions are very welcome.[FONT=Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]
