Lands End, the Long Island mansion that inspired F. Scott Fitzgerald’s “The Great Gatsby,” met a wrecking ball this weekend.

It seems like the spot should have been declared a national landmark.

That's simply insane. Don't you have something like English Heritage? (A conservation charity that buys up important buildings and opens them from the public.)

As I recall, a few years ago someone planned to demo Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's house. I'm not sure what happened with that.
