Has anyone ever read a book that ended up being way better then you expected?

A friend of mine had been bugging me to read "Frankenstein" and when I finally did I was honestly surprised at the amount of symbolism and philosophy in it.

Watership Down.

I was going through a list of 'must read' books (i.e., Jane Eyre, Wuthering Heights, The Wasp Factory, etc.), but was having trouble staying involved with them. I like more plot with my stories; character focused stories tend to get dull for me after a while. Usually by the time I hit the last third of the story, I'm wishing something exciting would happen to keep me reading.

Then I hit Watership Down and found a good balance of plot and characterization that made it enjoyable to read.
