The manuscript is 56,000 words long right now. Here's a short description:
Seventeen-year-old Belén has never believed in ghosts. Until she meets a spirit who tells her that her former neighbor is a war criminal.
The spirit, Ale, is one of the 30,000 victims of the ‘Dirty War’ waged by Argentina’s military during the 1970s and 1980s. For over two decades, she’s roamed the city of Buenos Aires, waiting for justice that’s never come. The only way she'll be at peace, she tells Belén, is if Belén's former neighbor rots in jail for the rest of life.
Belén is forced both by Ale and by a school project to delve deep into Argentina's brutal past. She's furious when she learns that torturers and murderers (like her ex-neighbor) can roam free due to amnesty laws and presidential pardons that excuse most Dirty War-era crimes. As they struggle to break through the shield of impunity that surrounds Belén's former neighbor, Belén realizes that the past is still very much alive.
Unfortunately, I can't promise return reads/beta-ing at this time (or at least return reads that I'll get back to in a timely fashion--it's about to be finals season at college D: ). But once I'm done with school for the year, I can definitely offer return reads (i.e. in, like, June).
ALSO: Trigger Warning (for realistic--not overly gratuitous, but nevertheless, realistic--portrayals of rape/torture). I just wanted to let people know that upfront, so they wouldn't find themselves in an uncomfortable situation later.
PM me if you're interested
