Should’ve posted something here earlier. Hello, y’all. This site’s great for writing tips and critiques, and even better for killing an hour or three while waiting for inspiration to fill an otherwise blank screen. Kudos granola bars to the site admin and the talented contributors. So I’m a twentysomething guy who acts younger than his age, and I’m considering quitting everything to lock myself up in some mountain cabin and pound out the… well, not the Great American Novel. How about the Pretty Good American Novel, to borrow an expression from one of my favorite authors, Garrison Keillor. I mean, how hard can it be?

But then I remember some story I read about a character who does just this -- finds a secluded spot, kits it out with typewriter, spare ribbons and enough instant coffee, oatmeal and toilet paper to last a year. But the only thing he can’t bring himself to do is actually lock the door and begin writing. Which reminds me….

Behind you!
It's nice to meet you. I always wonder how people know how much food and toilet paper they need for a year...

Maryn, who has a long stick to poke with if you don't start writing eventually (and will use it to pass a roll of toilet paper if necessary)

Hey there!

Saw "g'day" and saw the --oz as part of your username and thought you may be in AU. :) Realised not when I read Great American Novel.

Anyway, welcome!

Ah, there's not a writer out there who can say there aren't distractions and actually mean it! Welcome to your newest distraction! :hi:

Thanks gang. I'd say toilet paper consumption's one of the more predictable of human phenomena... assuming you're not doing much Third-World travel. The cabin lifestyle and the oatmeal would force you into a certain regularity, to the point where could start counting perforated squares per...

Alright, enough on that. I said I tend to act young -- didn't mean immature.

Used to live in Oz -- Fremantle to be exact, thus the g'day. I couldn't fake the Great Aussie Novel if I spent the next two decades flat out like a lizard drinking, though I'd return there in a heartbeat if given the chance.

Okay, back to it dudes--
