Aloha,

What a sweet community you have here!
I'm new to message boards but you're writers and the posts I have read so far are refreshingly articulate. Yay.

I self-published a self-help/health book in paper and it is selling well locally and through my website. I live in Hawaii, am a working single mom (2 teenagers) and am doing all this by myself, on a budget, in my "spare" time.
Now it's time to put out the eBook version and I'm overwhelmed by all the options to consider.

The conversion services say it's a complicated process and, of course, one must use them. On Amazon's site, the posts say it's easy to upload files and bingo, you're in business. My book designer says my book has enough styles, graphics and cartoons that self-conversion might not give me the results I want. Then there's metadata, CSS attachments, keywords and probably a list of things I'm not even aware of yet.

My book is 250 pages in print, B & W interior + graphics and cartoons; color cover. I'm about to do my third real-copy print run.

How do I navigate the eBook process?
I would love to hear from you if you have eBook experience, especially if you have self-published paper, first.

Thank you for your help!

Probably the library.
Never published an eBook before (or anything for that matter... >.< ), but I'm sure someone here can answer your questions.
Welcome :)

Yeah I know nothing about ebook publishing, but it sound exciting. What type of self help do you write on? Relationships? Personal self esteem? Mental health awareness (not sure if that would really be self help...)?

it's about connection

I've written two novels, published various articles, written poetry, and journaled since I was 13, but this (NF book) is my first real book.

I've been doing massage and listening to bodies with my hands and intuition since I was a kid. My book has stories, exercises, and the wisdom I've accumulated from nearly 40 years of practice and inquiry. My website,
www.HealingCatalyst.com has more about my book, Issues in Your Tissues.

Like all writers though, I want to connect with people. In my particular case, I also would love to help people connect back into their own bodies. Most of us live in our heads yet there's so much magic and aliveness in our bodies if we but dare to explore there!

I know nothing about ebooks, sorry. Just wanted to welcome you to AW. I'm sure there's lots of people that can answer your questions here. You can probably even do a 'search' on ebooks and find some threads here on it. :)

love the red dragon!

Thank you for the welcome note.

I just tried to upload an image for my profile. 128 pixels is really small.

I see that I'm all business here and most of y'all are having fun!
Once I get my bearings, I'll be ready to play, too.

:D It's not all fun, there's SYW(Show your Work), research threads, writing threads, politics, agent and editor threads and so on. But yeah, there's alot of fun threads and we do goof off alot, it's a good break from the waiting, editing, and writing. ;)

Thanks on my dragon comment. :)

Welcome to AW. Hope you enjoy your stay with us.
How do you like your popcorn?

If you go to the bottom of the page to the ‘forum jump’ you can scroll down and find all the areas of this place. Most of the SYW areas require the password of ….vista. A word to the wise, (50 posts), it would be a good idea to participate first in helping others before you think about posting your own work. After you have been around here for awhile, then post something of your own for help. Good luck.

Hi there, and welcome. As far as I know, ebooks just need to be formatted in a certain file (for instance, Word). You can then download them to another computer. If you want to have a Kindle or Sony Ebook, you have to get into contact with those responsible and ask them how to get things done. You have to live in the States to work with Amazon, that much I know.

:hi::hooray: You should check out Smashwords.com they will do most of the work for you in converting your book to the different ebook formats and distribute it. It's great if you aren't sure of what to do. :)

Greetings and welcome to the watercooler :welcome:

Take a wander around the various forums, there's lots to see and lots to learn, and even some fun threads too. Come along and pop on over to the Newbie Pub (at the top of the Newbie forum) and say hi, there's plenty of friendly faces that you can chat with and lots of banter. There's also the Question of the Day threads at the top of the Newbie forum where you can answer random questions.

Don't forget to read the newbie guide, and if you want to know what all the buttons mean check out this thread.

Okay, first off, you'll need to perfect the appearance of your book document in exactly the fashion you would LIKE to see it produced.

Second, understand that due to the problems inherent in converting a document to an ebook your book will NEVER look as good on an ereader as it does on paper. A screen simply cannot deliver the same kind of impact that a real photograph or paper imprint can.

In addition, because of screen sizes, formatting necessarily varies between readers substantially. What I read on an iPad screen will be substantially different from what someone sees on a Sony, a Nook Color, or a Kindle screen. Let's not even talk about what happens on a cell phone screen.

So, one of your first choices is actually going to be "Do I even want to do this book as an ebook due to the display limitations?"

IF you decide the answer is "Yes", my suggestion is to go to Smashwords and very, very carefully read their formatting document. Why Smashwords? First, formatting for them is a virtual Boot Camp in how to format ebooks. They explain exactly how things will appear best and lead you through the process of formatting and laying documents out for ereaders.

Second, Smashwords provides substantial feedback if you screw something up (everyone does, I did(and do)) that helps you fix the problems.

Third, if you list Smashwords as your publisher, they provide you with a FREE ISBN. As you must have an ISBN to publish at Amazon Kindle, that is a substantial monetary savings.

Fourth, let's say you opt out of Smashwords' Amazon distribution. They still distribute to Sony, Stanza, and half a dozen other markets including Barnes & Noble.

You're free to take down/unpublish a book at any time with Smashwords. you can take it down, make corrections or fixes, upload a new cover image, etc., etc., and then republish it at any time.

Finally, it's all absolutely FREE OF CHARGE and the only thing it costs you to do anything I've outlined above is your time. Smashwords does charge for a few things and they have some services available, but Mark Coker has thus far abided by Yog's Law "Money flows to the author" and not charged for anything out of the ordinary (or sneaked a charge in on anyone).

Once you've got the formatting sufficient for inclusion in Smashword's Premium Catalog you can rest comfortable in the notion that your book is going to look good when you publish it over on Amazon, on PubIt, or wherever it might appear in the forest of eroding devices available today.

(No, I don't work for Smashwords nor was I paid in any way for this endorsement, but if they want to slip a few dollars over my transom I do have a PayPal account).

:)

Thank you for your thorough and informative post!
Is your book straight fiction text without images or graphics?

I already have a printed book that I think looks superb. (I would love the eBook looks tahat good.) I went the full, traditional self-publishing route. (I set up a publishing company, bought 10 ISBNs, bar code; Paid a book designer, paid a printer, set up with a fulfillment service, put up a website - the whole 9 yards.) I also have the PDF file of the interior that is already formatted, just not digitalized.

Because I already own my ISBNs and would get a smaller commission from Amazon etc. I'm wondering if using Smashwords would be my best bet. The designer who set up my book said ther are enough graphics and formatting that my book would look/read better if I got a pro to convert it. (She wasn't angling to do the work herself.)

Still, it's great to hear that you have had such a great experience with Smashwords.
Have you sold books well due to their marketing and promotion or has that all come from you?

Is it improper to use names here? Clearly you have told us yours?
