Do PR agencies hire freelance release writers?

Has anyone tried getting freelance work simply writing press releases for PR agencies/companies? I know the obvious answer is to call some and ask but I just don't want to waste time calling a bunch of companies to find one that might need this if it isn't standard practice. Seems like it wouldn't be a specialized enough skill (too many people writing the same kind of stuff) for them to pay a freelancer to do, but I could be wrong.

In this business, generally you have to take work wherever you can find it, and being very aggressive/singular in your search. If this means doing the ring around in your select target market, then this is what you could do.

Others have found reliable long-term clients this very way.

I own an Entertainment PR agency and work hand-in-hand with dozens of other agencies to put out press releases and other items. Quite a few of the smaller PR companies may be looking for freelancers to fill in gaps along the way. Depending on where you are located, go to the Chamber of Commerce and get a list of all of the agencies in town (or business cards for them if available). Create a price structure for yourself and send them a pretty snappy e-mail describing yourself and services. If they're interested, they will contact you.

Another good way to get a little more work (again depending on where you live) is to make contact with some of the talent agents and managers around town. Their acting/modeling clients always need to have their biographies and press packages updated. Sometimes that can turn into more than just freelance. It could get you your own boutique PR agency.

Hope this helps...
