Hi all, I've finally given in and decided to launch a blog with writing tips and advice. I get a lot of requests for advice, and I want to start publishing a 'reader mail' type of section, so I'm posting here for anyone who has a question. What a generous offer! I have one, though I realize I'm in an odd situation and you may not have an answer.
I'm a full time volunteer, getting room and board but no money, so I don't currently pay income taxes. I am interested in freelancing to earn a small amount of money--say $200/$300 yearly. eHow and many Elance providers want W-9 forms from writers. If I fill out a W-9 form will I be required to fill out an income tax return even if I don't make enough to owe taxes?

I may post this on my blog anyway for others to read, but SK was right in the other thread - you only have to file if you make more than $600. But do keep your income records, just to be safe.

How to get corporate clients?

I've heard various views on how to get corporate clients. Some freelancers try cold-calling the directors of PR at companies. Some try networking through their Chamber of Commerce or Board of Trade. Some rely on word-of-mouth referrals. Do you consider these to be equally useful?

For cold calling, is it best to just ask the contact if they have writing/editing needs? Or should I be suggesting something specific that I'd like to help them with, such as speechwriting or social media content?
