Hi, I'm working on a piece that I want to try to send to a contest and a online zine. Should I do this if the rules don't say "only want unpublish work"?

Can't speak to online zines, but the contests I've looked into are typically very specific as to published/unpublished. Follow the guidelines or contact them if you have any questions.

I would say figure out which one you want to be most published in, and send it to that one and wait and see the results first. Otherwise, you could possibly risk messing up BOTH opportunities. Check their guidelines, as shadowwalker said. Be absolutely sure before you commit to sending to both at the same time.

Anytime I've looked into contests they've been very specific about the published/unpublished thing. A lot of them also specify that simultaneous submissions are OK, but please, please PLEASE notify them if it's accepted (and you decide to publish it) anywhere else. Check the guidelines.
