Someone asked me if this is possible and I didn't have an answer.

Is there software available for the computer or do people have to buy an e-reader?

Thanks!

Yes, but it depends on the publisher, seller, and servers... If you can download the files directly to your computer, you can use various e-readers to read it, including Kindle, Nook, Stanza, Calibre, etc. There are TONS of e-reader software and they're free.

Many e-books are either in the standard ePub or other popular formats.

And if you have a mobile device such as iPod Touch, iPhone, iPad, or Android, you could download eReaders such as Kindle or iBooks and read your e-Books on those devices.

Well, it depends. Sometimes you need special software, and sometimes they are Adobe PDF files (which most people already have).

For example, if you're downloading an e-book from Amazon (Kindle file), then you will need their Kindle for PC software.

Generally this type of software is a quick download, and a relatively easy set-up.

ETA: I was typing while maestrowork was posting, so I might have duplicated his answer somewhat.

For ease of reading I recommend MobiPocket Reader. It has great font and color options for reducing eyestrain. Also imports some other formats. Kindle for PC sucks rotten potatoes, and Adobe Digital Editions is like a steel straitjacket. So if you don't have 20-20 vision and/or want to keep what you have, watch out for what formats are available when you choose a book.

New question - I'll just stay in my own thread.

If I publish with Smashwords, why would I want to publish anywhere else when Smashwords will make my memoir available to so many e-readers? Color me thick, but I wouldn't need to publish with Amazon for the kindle if Smashwords already offers that - right? That would mean I'd be publishing with Amazon twice. Once indirectly through Smashwords and then a second time directly. Or am I way off?

More options for someone to find your book.

I only rarely check out Smashwords, and then generally only when someone I know sends me a direct link.

Ah HA! But it would only be listed for sale, once - right?
:) Thanks!

You are correct. Your book will be listed on Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and all the other platforms you choose. In fact, I understand that Amazon (and any other company) would frown on duplicate posting of the same book with them by the same author. Smashwords explains a lot in the Marketing PDF. A boring, but essential read. Basically, set it up right, and let Smashwords do the publisher's job of sending the book to all the e-reader outlets. You still have to market, and list where it is available, it's just easier if it's available in multiple formats, and readers can find it in their preferred "store".
