I'm new, so forgive me if this is a dumb question. I noticed there is a column titled "Rating". In this column there are various icons that somehow get put there by someone. Some icons are stars, some are push-pins, and some look like little silver garbage cans or something . . it's hard to tell. Could someone please tell me what these icons mean and how there get there? Thanks.

If you position your cursor over an icon for a few seconds, you should see a "tool tip" pop up explaining the function or meaning of the icon.
I would guess that if a thread has a deleted post in it that it was one of the moderators that did the deleting . . . since we I don't believe have the ability to delete a post. Would this be close to accurate? Also does anyone know who awards the stars?
Adding to someone's reputation icon
Here's another question along the same vein. Over on the left under each person's icon there are some small icons at the bottom. . . . right next to the little green button that tells you if someone is on line right now. One of these icons is silver looking and when you hold your cursor over it . . it says "Add to XXX's reputation." Could this have anything to do with the stars? If not could someone please tell me what would happen if I clicked this for someone? Thanks.

That's the "send a rep" icon. You can use it to say "Thanks" or "LOL" or whatever to someone about their post. You can only send one rep for any one post.

It explains a lot of what you're asking.
The stars merely indicate how much people like a particular thread; it's not a big deal. Very few people rate threads.
