Hi, I looked all over dictonary.com and throu books, I know I've seen the word before but can't find it. It's a word meaning stare, or glare. Scortanize? If you know the word, or can guess what I am trying to say, please help?

Thank you much.:)

"Scrutinize" doesn't mean the same thing as "stare". To scrutinize means to examine something with great analytical attention to detail. To stare means simply to look at something fixedly. You scrutinize a crime scene, looking all over for evidence. You stare at a streaker, but probably don't scrutinize him.

And none of the words suggested by Mystery1 are exactly synonymous with "stare" either. Nor does "glare", which implies anger or disapproval associated with the looking.

Why are you trying to avoid "stare"? It's a perfectly good, simple, and well-understood verb.

Context, please.

He stared at her -- he simply looked intently at her

He glared at her -- he stared at her with menace or ill or angry intention

He studied her -- he looked at her to figure out something...

He scrutinized her -- he looked at her, questioning her...

He gazed at her -- he stared at her with love, admiration, desire...

He gawked at her -- he stared at her stupidly...

He gaped at her -- he stared at her open-mouthed... with wonder, surprise...
