I have completed a mystery caper and am looking for a good list of publishers to approach. Ideally I'm looking for a list that would contain medium sized or even newer, less established publishers who might be more willing to take a chance on a new, unpublished author. Does anyone have a good suggestion where I could go to get a good list? Thanks.

Please take a close look at www.agentquery.com for how to submit to agents, which is the usual approach. As I understand it, most publishers do not accept unsolicited mss. Some of the smaller ones do, though. AW has a great Bewares and Background forum with loads of info. Once you're ready to start on a query letter, go here (password is vista) and check out how others are doing theirs. Make sure you read all the stickies there. Immensely helpful.

Yes, that is a great site. I have it bookmarked on my computer and use it. You'll notice that part way down the screen it says that "Nothing could be further from the truth than thinking you must have an agent to get published." That sentiment was duplicated at a writer's club meeting where I live here in Atlanta . . . we met with several published authors . . and the conclusion was that for a new writer it's harder to get an agent than it is to get a publisher. They urged me to approach newer or medium sized publishers directly. It's so hard to know which is best, because you'll note several of the posts on this thread indicate the best route for an unpublished writer is to first get an agent. One hears so many conflicting bits of advice.

I am a newbie here at AW and am learning so much already. I particularly appreciate your suggestion above that I can to to the section called "Share Your Work" and get my query letter critiqued. Am I correct in my understanding that I must have 50 posts before I can do this?
Yep, you need 50 posts to start a thread in SYW. In the meantime, try your hand at critiquing other folks to get a feel for the process.
