Introduction and a question

I have a completed novel and am looking for a good list of publishers to approach. I'm looking for a list that would include medium and perhaps newer, less established publishers who would be more likely to take a chance on an unpublished new author. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks.

Well first if you think you really have a shot, which I'm sure you do, you would look for agents first. BUT...

If you do want to look for publishers here are some sites to help you hone in on what the pub wants.

If you are going to go the agentless route or even if you decide to find an agent first. Backgrounds, Bewares and Recommendations is a good place to start. You will find many agents and publishers along with information, links to their sites and their reputations.

Don't do it.

Start at the top and work down.

Your smaller, less established publishers don't have the resources to support authors that the bigger ones have.

And the bigger, long-established ones have more reserves, which allows them to take on less-obviously-commercial writers.

The major publishers are all looking for The Next Hot Thing which is, pretty much by definition, going to be a new, unpublished author.

Introduction(Merged threads)

Just a quick note to say hello. I'm a total newbie here and have already gotten a lot of helpful advice. For a little background on me . . . I have a mystery caper completed and approached 14 agents with it about 5 years ago and got rejected by all of them. I got a little dejected and retreated to lick my wounds and tweak things a bit. I changed the title (which really sucked) and dramatically improved the synopsis. Now that I'm back on the hunt I've noticed some big changes in the way things are done compared to 5 years ago. Back then agents would specifically say "No e-mails". Now it seems e-mail is the preferred mode of communication. There are also a lot more on line support sites. This one is a good example. I'd be curious to know, did this site exist 5 years ago? At any rate I'm going to spend the next few days just learning about this site and its huge array of support categories. Glad to be here.

Hi again Umgowa! I agree with anyone who says you should consider an agent. If you've made enough changes on your book, including the tile and the query letter, why not give it a shot? there are other agents, newer and a more diverse group. I would say try again and if it still does not work, look at the smaller publishers. All the best!!
