Read good 3rd person fiction with a critical eye. Most of it is in past tense, and if you do come across a rare present tense, the difference will be obvious and startling. Once you see how your favorite authors do it, you should be able to emulate them.
Roughly 90% of published novels are written in third person, past tense. Study them. Beyond this, it's a mater of pretty simple grammar.
