Hello all. I'm a newbie, I suppose, having only found and joined AW a few days ago. But that's not why I'm here.

I'm here because AbsoluteWrite is already starting to get in the way of my writing. I'm checking the boards I'm hanging out and posting in almost constantly now; I'm reading and pouring over the mountains and mountains of information and interesting tidbits; I've talked more about the craft we all share in days than I have with anyone else in years.

Where am I supposed to find time to write if I'm spending all my time here? Is the AW patch out yet? Do I need to find a site blocker so I can get some real work done?

I'm already an addict, AW'ers! Why can't I quit you?!?

Probably the library.
Welcome :)
I spend a lot of time on here as well (it seems hard to believe I only joined the site last month... >.< )
If you PM one of the Mods, they could temporarily ban you if you need it. :) The only problem with doing this is it doesn't block you from reading anything that isn't password protected, it only blocks you from the forums that are and from posting and logging in.
Good luck! :)

Welcome to AW. Hope you enjoy your stay with us.
How do you like your popcorn?

If you go to the bottom of the page to the ‘forum jump’ you can scroll down and find all the areas of this place. Most of the SYW areas require the password of ….vista. A word to the wise, (50 posts), it would be a good idea to participate first in helping others before you think about posting your own work. After you have been around here for awhile, then post something of your own for help. Good luck.

Welcome Shuemais! Hi, my name is Jennifer, and I'm an AW addict. Is the first step acceptance? Because that's as far as I've gotten. I really have to force myself to work. I use AW as a carrot. If you finish this chapter, you can check out AW! Good luck!

Multiple posts are probably frowned upon (they were when I was doing in forum admin work), so I'll pose my question here.

There seems to be a SYW forum for every genre imaginable, but this appears to be geared more towards full projects. Is there anywhere devoted to sharing or critiquing queries?

Don't forget to read the Newbie's Guide and enjoy AW

Members who want to start a thread in Share Your Work to have work critiqued need
50 posts. So take some time to read the stickies, greet fellow newbies, critique other members’
works, or join a discussion.

I have passes for the pool on the roof, only $10

There is a Query Letter SYW but all Share Your Work requires members to have 50 posts before they can start a thread. You can crit other members queries without having 50 posts.

where you can put sugar sprinkles on lots of thing
:welcome:

Jennifer's right, I also use AW as a reward. If I put in my two hours on the mss, then I get to go to AW. No two hours, no AW.

What's that about multiple posts being a problem? Never heard that, we're friendly, interested, be nice and you can play.

Hello! I have the opposite problem - I have no online network to speak of, because I barely have enough time to write, and when I read blogs, I just read them. But I need some community, and I'm not going to get it where I live! So I am grateful for all you addicts.

Welcome, Shuemais. :welcome: And yes, AW is very addicting. If, like me, you have trouble disconnecting voluntarily from the internets you might find this program i recently discovered (through AW, no less) helpful: Freedom. It'll disable internet access for a specified period of time (15 mins to 8 hours), and the only way you can get back on the net within the time is to reboot your PC.

Multiple posts are probably frowned upon (they were when I was doing in forum admin work), so I'll pose my question here.

Yep. Sure is. Query Letter Hell. And it's called hell for a reason ;) Enjoy!

Ah yes - just one more distraction! I have heard of programs that you can set up to lock yourself out of cruising the net in order to get some work done. Of course the issue there is getting annoyed at the program and just shutting it down which negates the whole idea of loading said program... :p Damn or need for self discipline!

Hi and welcome! You can choose to call this a distraction, or you might find a way to strike a balance. If it wasn't aw.com forums, it might be facebook, or twitter. The point - I think - is to realize you aren't alone. There are lots of folks in the same boat. Knowing that can really help you out in the rough times, and sharing what you learn helps others here as well. Also, getting involved in a community can help you with "betas" of your work. I think overall you will end up gaining more than losing if you immerse yourself here. If you respond to discipline, simply set up set times to visit and others to write.
