Tomorrow afternoon I have an appointment at the vet to euthanize my senior cat. She's been suffering from diabetes for about six months, and is really beginning to fade. I did the twice-a-day insulin shots for some weeks, but it didn't do any good. She has developed cataracts and is slowly going blind. Eleven years old, not that geriatric for a cat, but it's time.

She's a bit special to me, in that I literally rescued her as a stray kitten, up a tree in the woods, abandoned, apparently. And gave her a comfy house cat life. She was never even tempted to go outside. She's a tortoise-shell cat, and until the cataracts began to cloud her eyes, had these big yellow eyes that made her look like a great horned owl.

She'll join a couple of earlier cats, in little jars of ashes on my mantel. But right now I feel totally like crap.

Thanks for reading this.

I'm so sorry :(

It's a tough decision to make, but it's the right one. She's had a great life thanks to you.

Oh, I'm so sorry. I've had to do this three times now, and it's always awful. She obviously had a good life with you that she wouldn't otherwise have had, and I'm sure she knows she's loved; but that doesn't stop it being a miserable thing to have to do. Sending hugs, if it helps.

Yeah, been there, felt that. When my first cat got old and sick (she had four surgeries for tumors over a year and a half; they couldn't do any more) and I had to make a decision, I hated to think that I would be the one to decide her life should end. As it turned out, she died on her own the night before I was to take her to the vet.

I don't know whether time heals all wounds, but it will get better.

I'm not a big fan of Robert James Waller in general, but you might find some comfort in this story of his cat:

For some days after, I swore I would never go through that again. If it came to euthanasia, I would refuse to be present. I have changed my mind. You owe that much to good companions who have asked for little and who have traveled far and faithfully by your side.

(You might want to copy and paste elsewhere; it's a little hard to read without changing the text and background colors).

So sorry you have to go through this. It's hard when we have to let go of those fur babies we love. A part of us knows letting them go so they are no longer suffering is the right thing to do, but it's so hard for our heart to feel that way. :Hug2:

I had to put down my chinchilla, he's buried in my back garden and my boyfriend's grandad made a wooden cross for him. I cried for weeks and days. It's a hard thing to do and hopefully time will help heal.

I feel your pain! Came here to express sympathy for the cat regardless of the circumstances, but since it is a pet you have my condolences.

I had to make the same decision on December 17. Posted memorials on several boards but don't seem to have here, so here it is:

O Captain! my Captain! rise up and hear the bells;
Rise up—for you the flag is flung—for you the bugle trills;
For you bouquets and ribbon’d wreaths—for you the shores a-crowding;
For you they call, the swaying mass, their eager faces turning;
Here Captain! dear father!
This arm beneath your head;
It is some dream that on the deck,
You’ve fallen cold and dead.

R. I. P. Captain 1998-2010.

So sorry. :Hug2: All of my cats are under 4 years old, but I dread the day when they will no longer be with me. Since yours was a rescue cat, think of all the years she's lived longer than she would have if she'd stayed in the wild. I'm sure she's eternally grateful to you for that.

Been there and done that. It is the price we pay for loving the fur babies. And I'll keep taking them in. All of ours have been rescues.

Oh, I am so sorry, blacbird. You rescued her and gave her a sweet life. May the wonderful memories of her give you peace. :Hug2:

I'm really sorry about your kitty. If it helps, I firmly believe that our lost pets are the first ones to greet us on the other side.

She was blessed to have you as a friend, both in the life you gave her and the selflessness you showed when it was time to let her go.

You feel bad, but she is no longer in pain. I lost my two senior cats last fall. Ashes on the mantal with their collars and tags tied around the tops. Every time I pass by, I touch the tags.
Rescue another little one soon. They need our help.

Sorry to hear that, Blackbird. She was lucky to have you with her.
