I was just over on the TIO thread and noticed several people have Banned underneath their names. Does that mean they have been truly banned, or is it just an inside joke?

Depends on the person. If the thread was in TIO, there's a chance they were really banned--which is probably why the thread is in TIO to begin with. But, there are some humorous people who put banned as their user title, and others who are self-banned, meaning they're staying off the site until they meet a deadline.

oooh, you can self-ban? That's hardcore :D

Well, you can request a self-ban, and one of us Supermonkeys will apply it. Any reason to push the ban button, yanno. :D

We can also do unspeakable things to your avatar. Like sparkles. Or Hello Kitty. Even *whispers* jigglypuffs.

Not that we DO, mind you. :evil

Love the new avatar Miss. I gotta get me a new one, tired of the stock dragon.

What does it take to be banned? I just noticed that on someone else who started a lively thread.

Being a spammer will get the banhammer dropped on you sans prejudice ASAP. Breaking the one true rule will get you a time-out of varying lengths depending on the depth of your disrespect; and, if you keep doing it, will get you a one-way ticket to the outer limits of the Cornfield. Being a particularly prickly asshat will eventually get you gone, too.

Just starting a 'lively' thread won't do it alone, though. Buster (aka: Mac, the owner of this fine establishment) would have to lock the doors on the empty rooms and turn out all the lights if that's all it took - there'd be none of us left. :) If you study the post history of those who have 'Banned' under their names, you can generally figure out where they went wrong. If you can't, you can bet something happened in emails/PMs that made it absolutely necessary for the banhammer to drop - we don't do it lightly.

Does self banning keep you from reading, or just from posting? I spend waaaay too much time on here reading.

Actually, that's right, Jersey. Or was... Some wiseacre found a way to do it and... well... got banned, iirc. :) Or I may have just dreamed that...

And self-banning means you can't get in to do anything, I believe. You can still contact a Super or Admin to get the ban lifted, though, Mary.

I just had a month's self-ban while I met a deadline. It stops you from signing into the site: you just get a message from Mac that tells you you're banned until whatever date you requested (and an email address in case you finish early and want to come back). I found it helpful - just took me out of automatic morning checks and reminded me I was meant to be focussing. You probably could still read the "open" pages if you wanted to - so not foolproof, but a good little helper. I'll do it again, when I get to the next deadline....

You need a mod to do it for you, though.

When I am on deadline, I have to physically uninstall the hardware that allows my computer to talk to other computers. I only have self control by merit of how truly lazy I am.

I thought if you tried to put "banned" as your own user title, it didn't work?

There's a work-around, and it's very different looking if you ah, know how to look.

And if some people are ah, crotchety, it may be enough to put ideas in some people's heads.

The main reason, as far as I've seen, is when people are unpleasant and give others a hard time and won't back off even after being warned. Some may have been temp-banned and given a chance to return, only to start right back where they left off as if they hadn't learned their lesson.

In other words, they're pretty much acting like jerks and disrespecting their fellow members.

You may not believe this, but after some years as a mod, I've never seen a person banned here who either didn't deserve it or see it coming themselves. Ever.

It's also worth noting that, considering the size of this community, the number of banned members is exceedingly small compared to active users.

Kinda proves my theory that internet trolls are all self-aware.

I remember the jigglypuffs. **shudders**

April Fool's Day can be hazardous to a user's health as well.

Some bannings come after a train-wreck of epic proportions. Some are fun to watch. Some, not so much.

Personally, I like flounces better. :)
