I'm writing a non-fiction and my subject matter has some shock value that would make good headlines & I could see working on a talk-show. There are some local woman's magazines i'm confident would do a write-up if I approach them.
That would be nice for the platform/ selling the book to publishers, right? But would it be better to do after the book is released to sell books?
I keep running into this which-comes-first dilemma where it seems that platform building could take away from an opportunity to market the book later.
Is there a way to approach magazines/tv shows etc and ask if they'll agree to do a feature when the book comes out (to reap the benefits of adding to the marketing section of my proposal, but also having the feature be timely for the release of the book?)
How have you balanced out your promotion before/after publication to get the most out of opportunities that, might only be available once if at all?
