Hello, everyone! I'm Pam. I write fantasy, both adult and young adult, and after my latest soul-crushing full rejection, I'm woman enough to admit that I need some help.

I'm looking for writing buddies/critique partners--people to (hopefully) form writing relationships with. I'm happy to cheerlead you on when you hit a rough spot or offer up suggestions about plot/pacing/characterization, and I'm looking for people willing to do the same. (I'm also happy to provide spelling/grammar help, too.) I love fantasy & science fiction, and I'm looking for people writing in those genres--preferably fantasy, since that's mostly what I write. My first manuscript is adult fantasy, 78k, and it's a fairytale retelling of Beauty and the Beast (like that hasn't been done to death already). It's gotten three full requests from agents, and subsequent rejections. I know it has problems, but I'm just too close to the subject to fix them.

My WIP is either MG or YA fantasy--the protagonist is 13, and I've seen conflicting reports about what age group that falls into. I also write short stories, and wouldn't mind helping a writing buddy with their own short stories, but if you're not interested in those, that's fine. I'm happy to read both adult & young adult/middle grade scifi/fantasy.

A little more about me: I'm new to the Absolute Write forum, but not to writing. I'm a freelance writer and an articles editor at Strange Horizons, and I have useless degree in poetry. Some of my favorite scifi/fantasy writers are Neil Gaiman, Robin McKinley, Kristin Cashore, Suzanne Collins, Maggie Stiefvater, Terry Pratchett, Kim Harris, and CJ Cherryh. I'm not a cut-you-to-the-bone editor; I'm honest with my critiques, but I always try to emphasize the positive as well, and I'm looking for equally honest readers/editors who aren't necessarily going to just spew venom at me. :) I can't always promise a lightning-fast turnaround; I check email constantly, so I'm always in communication, but if that's a dealbreaker for you, I understand.

Feel free to reply here or PM me if you're interested, and please do let me know if I've left out some important information here. :)

Hi.

I put up a notice for writing buddies in Southern California, but since I lived in Alabama for a while, I thought I'd send you a note.

My protagonist is 12, and a few of my rejections have come in the infuriating form of "we don't know what department to market this".

I do have an agent, (he signed me based solely on the first half of my book). But now I am doing a major rewrite and could also use some help.

Specifically,

After the wonderful first half of the book, where does your attention begin to drift? What do I need to do to keep your eyes glued to the page?

If you look back at my first post and my profile, you'll see my favorite authors and the style I strive for.

Let me know if you want to trade a chapter or two!
