View Full Version : Adding to a story--is it no longer a reprint?

I had a 69-word sci-fi story published in 2004 in a print magazine. The magazine folded in 2005, so the story isn't available in print or online (which is a requirement of pubs like Andromeda Spaceways).

If I wanted to submit it to a magazine now, I realize I'd have to let them know when and where it was published and try to place it as a reprint. But if I redo the story to make it longer (say for a market that accepts flash of 100 words or more only, or a higher limit), is it still a reprint or is it a new story? The nucleus of the story would stay the same.

My instinct, if I decide to expand it (which I might not, as there are some markets that take super short), is to submit it to someplace that does accept reprints, and mention that the orginal version was 69 words long and published in X in 2004, but this expanded version hasn't been published. Then I suppose it's in their hands, with full disclosure. Does this sound okay, or is there some point where it's no longer really a reprint?

Thanks!

Shelley

That sounds fine to me.

There is a point where a reworked story is no longer a reprint, but there's no definitive point, if that makes sense. Best to let individual publications decide for themselves.

(was that NFG?)

It was NFG! Alas, it didn't win. :)

Thanks,
