I've recently finished a short novel (24,000 words) Would I need to request the help of an agent or do I try to get it published in a magazine without the help of an agent?

You don't need an agent for short fiction. Send it off to markets, and good luck!
Lots of options for short fiction. You can start sending it off to whatever print markets publish your style of fiction. You can self publish on Amazon, though it's a really good plan to make sure that it's clearly labeled as a short story. You can start cruising the internet for online novella/short story publishers.
At that length I'd probably be more looking at the online market than the physical print market. An ezine has no issue about word count. 24k words could be a significant chunk of a magazine, though.

24,000 words isn't really a short novel, it's called a novella. You don't need an agent for that, nor will most large publishers look at fiction that length. Check market listings for places that publish novellas. If it's romance, there are lots of small presses especially that buy novellas.

A good starting place is duotrope.com. You can search by genre, length, whether it's an anthology and lots of other details.

I'm in the same boat. I have a 16K crime novella I'm looking to publish and I'm having a rough time. I've found some ezine markets but they don't pay. E-book pubs are intriguing but one must be careful. I was thinking of sending my story to an imprint called Damnation Books...until I looked them up here on AW in the Bewares and Backgrounds forum. Turns out they're one nasty little operation. Whatever market you finally choose, make sure you check the Bewares/Backgrounds forum first before submitting.
