Okay, I'm a newbie, but i can't believe that other people aren't frustrated by having to scroll past that ad page every time I move anywhere. I mentioned it my first day and someone mentioned an ad suppressor. Never heard of one. Anyone know a way to be able to just start at the AW banner there, where it tells you where you and who you are? (As for who I am, at my age and mental condition that's a handy reminder.)

Or just click the "New Posts" link. Much easier than navigating to a ton of subforums. The ads at the top of the page are a necessary inconvenience, I guess. You learn to just scroll past them quick enough.

the ads are what keeps this place free, so I have no problem with them at all.

I see. They are a necessary evil. Okay. That's the count. I'll tell a bunch of you all the story behind that little phrase some day, but it means pretty much "it is what it is, get over it." Thanks all. I can do that.

You can also think of it as, How much do I pay to help keep this site running?

If the answer is nothing, well, the ads allow you to enjoy this site for free, so you should be thankful for their presence instead of complaining.

What kind of a computer/device are you using? The ads aren't even noticeable on my PC screen, but I'm also a paying member, so I don't know if that makes a difference.

It doesn't make a difference.

If you aren't seeing ads, your ad-blocker is probably killing them. I'd actually suggest whitelisting AW if that's the case; the ads here are pretty minor (they're not giant Flash monstrosities that play music or steal the page), and they do help to pay the upkeep. Alternatively, toss money Mac's way with the PayPal button above.

I know how much various folks (forums, webcomics, etc.) rely on advertising to bring in money to pay for hosting costs, so I actually have the default ad behavior as 'allowed' until a site does something that really bothers me. Popover Flash advertising that blocks my ability to read an article until I dismiss it gets you added to my ad blocker settings, for instance. An ad that plays audio, like, "Congratulations! You just won an iPod Nano! Click on the ad to enter your details!" will also get you added to the blocklist immediately. But banners that aren't directly killing my ability to read the page? I'll leave 'em, as they are often a necessary evil in paying the bills. :)

I don't have an ad blocker installed, for the reasons you just mentioned - I totally understand the online content I get for free is costing someone money, so I also don't mind the ads.

I'm not sure exactly what you're referencing, but as a website owner/operator, ads are what keep the hosting affordable. As such, ads don't bother me. And I'm trying to contribute via the donation button when I can.

But I must admit, I didn't realize that before I hosted my own forum. I think understanding the costs of running a free forum are important for all users to understand.

:)

I sympathise. I was horrified when I first got here and saw all those ads at the top of the page. But I'd forgotten about them until I saw this thread, so I must have become used to them a long time ago. They really don't bother me these days because I simply don't notice them. Hopefully you'll get used to them too. Stick with it.
