I got a Kindle for Christmas and now I want to take it on the bus with me. I've done a bit of research on protective Kindle covers and have seen some complaints about the most popular cover cracking the Kindle device when it's opened incorrectly.

For those of you with a Kindle, do you have a cover? Which cover do you have? Have you had any problems with it? Have you heard about these issues?

Thanks!

I have a black leather rigid cover, very simple with no zip or any other fuss. My kindle fell from the couch and the bed twice. Never had any problem. I couldn't find it on Amazon as I have the old version. I definitely recommend you to get it.

That sounds like what I want. Can you still get that version?

There's a Kindle cover that comes with a light that doesn't cause the Kindle to crack. It gets great reviews, but it's expensive and a few ounces heavier.

Anyone have that one and love it (or hate it)?

I've had the leather Kindle cover since receiving the device as a gift back in October. It can be folded back and held in place by an elastic band. Really provides protection. There have been some complaints that these cause some sort of problem causing re-boots and such with the Kindles. Mine hasn't exhibited that problelm-yet. I think that is a well made cover design.

I have the kindle cover with the light built in (in hot pink, of course). It's very rigid and I haven't noticed any problems with my Kindle and I've been...well, if not rough, I certainly don't go out of my way to be gentle. The light is really awesome too. I was initially skeptical (okay, IRRITATED) that I'd have to pay $60 for the cover, and I didn't like how rigid it was either, but now I'm happy with it.

I do also have a Nook with a leather cover and the Nook cracked from basic usage and the cover (which I would flip backward and tuck in) got loose after a month or two of usage. Not so with the Kindle.

I've heard about the issues. I bought my Kindle case from an Ebay seller in China, and have been using it for a week with no problems. Also, I am a commuter who travels by bus, train and subway, so I know what you mean about not wanting to damage the Kindle. The case is very sturdy, and it cost me about $11 USD, including shipping. The seller's username is TotyWang2008. Edited to add: the case is hard, but I wouldn't describe it as rigid or inflexible.

Likewise, I have the same Amazon leather cover (with built-in booklight); I haul my Kindle around everywhere, and I haven't had any issues with it cracking.

Mind you, because of how the clips that hook the light to the Kindle (so that the light is powered by the Kindle's battery) work, I /can/ see how if you flexed the Kindle in the case a bunch, it could potentially crack the Kindle. But for my own use, I've had no issues with this case (or any of the other previous Kindle cases I've used with my older Kindle and Kindle 2, prior to this Kindle 3).

Yes, the one with the light doesn't have the cracking issue. I comes when users open the cover incorrectly (backwards) and the stress of it cracks the device.

I'm leaning toward the one with the light. Thanks for your insight!

I have the red leather cover with the light and love it. I have dropped my Kindle from a height onto concrete with no damage.

Also, the light is handy...

Also, I got a nice red leather handbag *to match my Kindle cover*!!!

I have the "Built" brand neoprene sleeve. I would say it is perfect but I have the reboot problem and it is possible the cover is creating static or something causing that, so I wouldn't buy that one until they resolve this issue.
