It partially depends on the company who buys it. Some write the songs right into it. Some like all caps, other like normal feature writing. Pretty much all animations are written in company at least in the US.

Every feature animated script I've ever read looks exactly like a non-animated screenplay. The formatting is no different whatsoever. And neither are the dramatic conventions. Be mindful that, traditionally, animated specs are the toughest of all to sell.

Animation

I wrote my first animation script last year and, like creativexec says, its written exactly the same as any live action screenplay.

He's also right about selling. It's much tougher to get a read and most of the major companies appear to generate projects in-house.

I've fortunately managed to get some good interest from a producer in Australia who is going to take it to an associate in Hollywood, but if that falls through I'll try several up-and-coming animation houses.

I didn't deliberately set out to write an animated feature - the limited market would have put me off. The idea whacked me over the head and forced me to write it. And it was the most fun I've had behind a keyboard!

really tough sell!!!

Creative is 100% right... animation featues ae harder to sell than historical epics, believe me I have written both. I have written 4 feature length animations only because I like writing them, and it's good practice, but selling them... you better have a super man or woman agent even if its really good, first, they cost a lot to make even before you add "A" list voices to it. But if you like to wrrite, and you should, go for it, and just write it like a standard sceenplay.

Lots of luck on the sell, if you find a buyer send them my way ha! KD

sorry for spelling my keys are sticking

I sat at a roundtable with two producers from Pixar and Disney. They both said they don't look at animated scripts as reading samples, they prefer regular scripts. They are interested in the writers voice and style. THEN they decide to ask them to work on the script. Usually the concepts are generated in house.
