Alcoholism did for him in the end. Damn, I'm upset about this one.

Oh, what a shame. I've bought Baker Street on vinyl, 8-track, cassette, and CD, but apparently I never played it for The Kid (a serious music buff), who emailed me to ask if I'd ever hear of Rafferty because there was this song with this amazing sax riff...

Always a shame to see someone go by something as self-destructive as alcoholism, too. May he be at peace.

Sad news, but not unexpected. I think he'd been in a coma for the past week.

But Jebus, 63 is too young. RIP indeed.

Intriguingly, BBC Scotland yesterday was still trying to get confirmation on the Effing Peasants Message Board (named after one of Gerry's less kind descriptions of us fans) that Gerry is actually dead. After Gerry's unhappy experiences with journos over the last few years, I wouldn't put it past him to fake his death. But Gerry's brother normally posts there, and I guess if this was a bizarre hoax he'd have said so by now.

EDIT: Nope. There's confirmation on another board. He's really, really gone.
