This may seem like a silly question, but I thought it would be best to ask.
I have decided to take a plunge and attempt to enter the industry. I thought it would be best to start in a genre I love - children's entertainment. There are a couple children's shows being shot in Australia (my native country), and I do have a particular show in mind. Considering this would be my first submission, I am having trouble deciding what kind of writing samples I should prepare.
It's easy enough for me to spec a show in the same genre. However, should I have a couple features not in the children's entertainment genre to show my other writing abilities? I also have an animated action Pilot in the same vein as the show - would it be wise to include that?
Basically, it boils down to whether I should prepare original work for the submission and if so, what kind of genre would be suitable? Should the original screenplays be in the same genre?
On a side-note, I also have the email address for the production company. Would it be considered unprofessional to send a couple line email just generally enquiring whether they receive writing submissions and what kind they are looking for? I know it could be considered rude, but if done right, it would save me a lot of time and energy if they eventually turn out to not be accepting submissions.
