I don't write Urban Fantasy but I like to read it sometimes. Right now I'm getting rather tired of vampires, zombies, werewolves and all the usual stuff, it would be fun to find something where some of the stuff people actually have claimed to see is used.

So, does anyone know if there are stories which use, say, the black-eyed kids/persons, shadow people, ufo abduction where the aliens turn out to be something supernatural (there are plenty of ufo abduction stories where the greys or reptilians or whatever do stuff like walking through walls...), elves which are folkloric and not the standard Tolkien fantasy ones or turn out to be the same phenomena which now appear as ufo occupants, streetlight interference (SLIding), anything out of the ordinary for fiction but what you can find in Fortean or other research? The Michigan dogman or a supernatural version of bigfoot - possibly in connection with ufos because they do often appear in same areas and same sighting clusters - might be fun too. Or supernatural river/lake monsters?

Patricia Briggs had a supernatural bog critter in one of her books...Iron Crossed, I think it was.

Try Emma Bull War for the Oaks; one of the first Urban fantasy novels.

Try Elizabeth Bear's Blood and Iron and related books.

Wen Spencer Tinker and Wolf Who Rules books; I'm not really confident in calling these Urban Fantasy, in some ways.

Harry Connolly's series (Child of Fire, Game of Cages) uses magic and unusual supernatural elements, and is worth checking out.

Nicole Peeler's Jane True series has a half-selkie as the heroine and uses a lot of different mythological creatures, as well.

I'm quite fond of Seanen McGuire's October Daye books--elves, fairies, trolls, all living undercover in San Francisco.

If you're fond of ghosts, you could try Stacia Kane's books. The series name escapes me, but it's Unholy Ghosts, Unholy Magic, City of Ghosts--those ones.

Also Kelly Meding's Dreg City books have gargoyles--and gremlins! (And she's probably still wondering why I'm so thrilled by that...)

I second the recommend for Wen's books. She's an online friend of mine now, but I fell in love with her books way before I "met" her! I would also probably not classify them as "traditional" urban fantasy but still enjoy them. I REALLY love her Ukiah Oregon books, but these are definitely SF rather than UF.

I'm sure there are good examples of what you're looking for out there, but I am having "morning brain" atm and drawing a blank on suggestions.

ETA: OH! Actually, you might enjoy the Rob Thurman Cal Leandros books that start with Nightlife. It features a troll under Brooklyn Bridge, a boggle in Central Park, and other dark creatures from folklore. It's a gritty and very well-regarded UF series and might be along the lines of what you're looking for.

I'm familiar with both Emma Bull's and Wen Spencer's books, but I'll check out the others. Thanks.

There are so many different and delightfully creepy stories of all kinds of critters out there that I do find it a pity so many writers keep on using just those few most familiar ones. They do have their place, vampires and zombies can still be fun when done well, it's just that it would be nice if there was a bit more variety. Especially since, as said, the writer doesn't even have to invent new critters, they already exist as urban legends, folklore and in paranormal stories.

A bit off the subject but about these unused paranormal story critters, has anyone seen the trailer for the new movie 'Vanishing on 7th street'? At least the trailer looks like perhaps some writer/s has read about the Shadow people/Shadow ghosts (no idea how original the movie's basic premise is, seems there is a similar game).

Er, off the subject, about that 'In the land of frost, volcanoes, and well-armed women' which now seems to appear under my name, no volcanoes around where I live. I did, however, once work a few summers in a project called 'The Lapland volcanite project' so perhaps it's as fitting as that 'well-armed women' bit if you go back far enough in time. About 2800 to 2700 million years or so.:D

I'd have to second these. I really enjoyed them. Elves are nasty and scary, which is nice for a change, and the relationship between the brothers is nicely done, I think.

I have recommended these before for different type of UF series (no vamps, weres or fairies). Vicki Pettersson Sign of the Zodiac series. It has superheroes in it, but not your typical superheroes. Very different from anything UF I have read, but I love these books.
