I've got it. Right now I'm running a full scan (I've got Microsoft antivirus) but I'm not sure it will work. Pop-ups occuring all the time telling me I've got a virus but that IS the virus! It's maddening. Some of the pop-ups won't even close.

Any advice?

ETA I've googled it and tried some of the stuff advised but it either didn't work or was too complicated. Do I need to install specific software to remove it?

I had one of those hit my office pc about a year ago.
Our IT guy downloaded Malwarebytes and that nailed it.

It's a right fecking pain in the arse, that virus. :(

Good luck.

If all else fails, take the problem to these guys:

http://www.malwareremoval.com/

They are very good and they work for free. Just be sure to do exactly what they tell you to do, in the order they tell you. You will probably want to get the latest copy of HiJackThis and run it first, and then make a copy of the log file it generates.

I had one of those last week. Two programs can get it, Malwarebytes with all the updates (free) and Windows defender with all the updates (free if you have a valid copy of Windows).

I've been using Kaspersky for three years now with little problem. I do change the update schedule so it runs its updates late at night. I do the same with scheduled scanning.

aaaah the good ol' windows days lol- before I quit financing microsoft, I was literally running 4 anti-malware programs simultaneously.
you could try some of those for yourself- as far as I remember the ones I used were:
spybot search and destroy
avast
cant remember the others, but if I do Ill come back and add them...

Do you know how to use Task Manager or Process Explorer to kill a process?

Are you familiar with editing your registry manually?

This might also help: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-removal/remove-antimalware-doctor

I tried the Task Manager first of all but it wasn't listed under the Processes -- at least, not under a name I could recognise.
Ont of the websites I read recomended PC Tools Spyware Doctor but I wanted to check with you guys first before I downloaded anything.
Thanks for all the tips. I'll telll you how I get on.

Aruna, get back to the sites you googled to begin with. Their removal instructions might be too complicated, but they generally explain what likely names the processes you want to kill might have. I had one such virus recently and although it killed my computer anyway, I was able to shut down the process because I could recognize it as one based on a bunch random numbers. Just make sure you don't delete a crucial process like I did.
