Hello again. I need some help or maybe just someone to turn me in the right direction.

Here's my dilemna: I freelance (newspaper stories) and usually am just told that they need a 10" or 12-15" story, etc.

But a couple of weeks ago, I accepted a lower-paying job from the newspaper's advertising department. (acquaintance of mine) I agreed to the lower pay ($25 each tiny story) because I did not have to go interview anyone. I figured I could whip up each small story in less than an hour. They fax me a page of info and I make it into a little story (they said 8" originally)

Well....today, I received my first four assignments. (For a Women-in-Business section) and now I'm lost.

They want me to write three of the stories for a 3X10.5 ad space (each) and one story for a 6X10.5 space.

I have ZERO idea what that means. I called and she said she didn't know either. I am tempted to just send her the original 8" story and let her worry about it but I know that won't fly.

Is there someone out there who knows how I can proceed -- or a place online to find this out?
I use the 40-words-equals-one-inch (newspaper) rule - but that won't apply here.

Any help will be appreciated.

Why won't the newspaper rule work? A column inch is one inch tall and two inches wide, or two square inches, which equals 40 words. I'm doing the math in my head, so it may be off, but a sleepy, mental calculation tells me the 3x10.5 ad space contains 15.75 column inches, which calls for 630 words, less a column inch at the top for title and byline, so 590 words. The 6x10.5 ad space has twice as much room, or 31.5 column inches, so it would require 1,180 words, minus one column inch for title and byline, or 1,140 words.

Converting as space to column inches is easy. It's just (3x10.5/2)x40 and (6x10.5/2) x 40.

What James said, unless the "3" in the 3x10.5 is actually 3 columns, rather than 3 inches. I'm wondering, because the directions said, "ad", and display ads are often defined by number of columns, rather than inches. Then, using the same calculation, it would be 6" x 10.5" x 40 or 2,400 words.

I'd ask again whether she's expecting 3 columns wide by 10.5 column inches long.
