Hi all. My brother has started writing parables and devotionals, and is interesting in learning more about writing books of this type. I'd like to get him some books for Christmas, and wondered if you guys had any suggestions on books on writing for the Christian market.

He's a newbie and just starting to get into it, so I'd like to start him off on the right foot. :)

Thanks!

I'm not sure whether this is what you're looking for (I don't really now what devotionals are), but Dostoevsky's 'The Brothers Karamazov' has chapters that might count as parables, and if not, they're at least something similar worth reading :)

The most famous one would be 'The Grand Inquisitor', altough this chapter kind of makes a case FOR Christianity but AGAINST God.

Then Book six of the novel called 'The Russian Monk' is a great story with messages. It is Dostoevsky's reply to the case presented in 'The Grand Inquisitor'.

If he needs a market reference book, have him pick up a copy of Christian Writer's Market Guide 2010, edited by Sally Stuart (any of the larger secular or Christian chains should have a copy in their store's reference section; some libraries too). It's massive, and full of good information.

Thanks! What I'm looking for it your basic "How To" books that deal specifically with Christian writing, especially devotionals or parables if they have them. I know with fiction, there are a million and some are much better than others, so I wanted to know if folks had favorites or ones they found especially helpful.

Ah, okay, have him check out The Christian Writer's Book--A Practical Guide to Writing, by Don Aycock and Len Goss (Bridge-Logos Publishers), Sally Stuart's Guide to Getting Published (Shaw Publishers) and The Complete Guide to Writing and Selling the Christian Novel, by Penelope Stokes (Writers Digest Books). Hope those help!
