About once a month I get a request from someone (all different someones) to be added to my contact list. It is easy enough to mark "no and don't let them see when I'm online", but do any of the rest of you get these requests? These are people that as far as I know I have never heard of.

Sometimes, but usually they're spam for porn links. I figure if someone wants to be my friend - whether it's real life, IM, facebook or whatever, they'll at least introduce themselves. If they don't, and I don't know who they are immediately, I reject.

I get them every once in a while when I check my Yahoo mail. (I hate that they've got the whole "YIM in your inbox" thing now. If I wanted to IM, I'd open YIM.) I've only ever seen 1 name request that I recognized. It took me a long time to realize they weren't pop-up ads because I'm so used to tuning things out that pop-up from nowhere on the side of my screen.

Except I never ask for a username. I just ignore people that I'm not sure I know. I expect people I know to send some kind of message or reminder, at least.

It's just spam. I no longer use Yahoo, but when I did I got them. MSN Messenger is also bad for them.

Second, the last time this happened to me was like two months ago. I messaged the person asking them who they were and they didn't respond. This was in Yahoo Mail in that chat in the mail they've got going on now, but this person actually expected me to accept them without knowing who they were, just like that. That's why I stopped using Yahoo. I use Windows Live and Gmail now, and the day that happens in Windows Live, I'm just going to ignore them.

Mary, if you pay attention (but don't click on the links, if any) you'll see they're all in one of two categories: identically-worded requests to chat from people who are in your address book (but did not send that request) and come-ons for porn.

There's a way to block all such requests. Play around with the Yah00 "options" panel. I turned mine off, but no longer remember how. Peace and quiet ever since. I'm not real good with computers, and I remember it took me about five minutes to figure out how to do it. But if I can, anybody could.
