There was a recent announcement of a new online atlas of Roman and medieval civilization.

It lets you construct your own maps of Europe and the Mediterranean, and you can choose whether they include things like physical features, roads, political boundaries, market towns and universities. It's quite fun to play with.

I have found subscribing to Questia is far less expensive than purchasing rare sources and less time consumung than hunting through libraries.
