I've just scared the crap out of myself with a waking dream. I work nights and haven't been sleeping enough during the day, so I was dozing (it's quiet and I work alone).

There is a monitor showing an external view of the garden outside my building (part of a formal mental institution - honestly). Stuff was being stolen during some building work and the night shift operator was supposed to keep an eye on things. The building work is long finished but the camera is still in place.

Looking at the image it must be bright moonlight outside, as it looks like a snow-covered landscape, complete with bare patches (shadows) beneath the trees. There is a weird semi-spectral light in the middle distance, almost in the shape of a man (no idea what it is). It looks a bit like the thermal imaging pictures of figures you get on police programs.

In my dozing dream the shape steps down over the hedge and walks across the lawn towards the camera, eventually passing out of view. The camera is mounted high on the wall so there is a blind spot beneath it. Then (the crap-scaring moment) this reverse-image face appears on the screen, right up close to the camera. I just know he will be able to climb out of the monitor and get me (shades of Ring here).

I came fully awake with a start and the whole building somehow seems a bit unsettling....

Heh, you're not the only one with enough imagination to seriously freak yourself out, especially alone at night in part of a former mental institution with a nearly-full moon outside . . . *shudder* I don't think I'd want your job. :D

I get these quite a lot. Problem is, when I am alone and just kind of spacing out, my mind runs wild with this and that. And if it started going in one direction, there is really no stopping it. Can't tell you how often I stood on my bus stop at night and thought about just not going down that dark road home because maybe those shadow people liked me too much. >.<

I know this post is a bit old, but that sounds like the perfect beginning/ hook for a suspense/ horror/ paranormal story. So many posibilities. Although, it being a former mental institution might be one of those real-life things that would never be believable in fiction, lol.
