Two threads in other subforums have kind of clicked in my head to create a new monster. One was in Romance, where the OP was asking for audiobook recommendations, the other was an interview on CNN (link posted in E-pub) with Stephen King talking about digital publishing.

A few weeks ago, someone pinged me asking how my pen name was pronounced because they were making the audio version.

First of all, I didn't know my novella was going to HAVE an audio version. Second of all, I thought I was getting pranked, because my novella is 28% explicit sex. Who the heck would want to buy an audio copy of erotica? Where would you listen to it? I listen to audio books in the car with my toddler or over the living room stereo while I cook dinner. There is not one single page from any of my four completed manuscripts that I would play in either environment. I could see how it might be handy to have a... no-hands version... for very specific circumstances on my iPod, of course, I'm not an idiot. But I'm struggling to imagine that being a big sales item.

In the CNN piece, they talked to a woman who was part of the early days of audio books, and she said, paraphrased, that back then, people asked her who the heck would want to listen to a book.

So... okay, now I have to ask the newbie question. Does anyone here have one of their erotic books on sale in audio form, and... does it sell well? Do any of you buy erotic books in audio form? Do you feel sorry for the poor actress who has to read these things? Are you now imagining a short story where a voice actress and a recording engineer get so hot and bothered by recording erotica that they end up doing it on top of a piece of spiky foam acoustic material?

My novellas are NOT in audio format, I'd love to know the answers to this question too.

Excluding the obvious niche market (for the vision impaired), I don't see (sorry about the pun) the appeal of audio for erotica either. I know a few epublishers offer it, but I could never really figure out why. I mean, it doesn't seem like the genre people would want to listen to while commuting (the most typical market for audio) or even while walking/jogging on a treadmill.

Ravenous Romance started out promising that all its books would be in audio format and that was one of the purportedly revolutionary aspects of the publisher, but I'm guessing the audio version didn't sell well, since the releases after the first few months seldom (if ever) had an audio version. It didn't help that they cost substantially more than the ebooks, either.

I recall seeing another erotica or ero-romance epublisher that focuses on audio, but I always thought it was going after a very small market. Then again, I'm a writer and reader, and not very attuned to sound, so that skews my perception.

I um, really can't imagine. Vision impared? Certainly.

I suppose if you wanted it for your iPod and didn't want people to know what you 'secretly' love to read?

I don't see any reason why erotica would not sell in audiobook format. It would be an obvious hands free reading option....

Yeah, I saw the hands free potential right away, but I also have it on good authority that I have a filthy mind.

I only know four writers in person, and all four of them immediately jumped to the running on a treadmill/car commuting scenarios and how they would be... hazardous. I know a sample of four is nothing but anecdotal and not evidence, but I can't help but be influenced to think that this has got to be a teeny niche. That's why I posted here - if I was wrong, AWers wouldn't be slow to tell me. With diagrams.

I remember the RR splash, now that you mention it, Jan - and it did fizzle awful fast.

well, I have copies of J.D Robb, which is thriller/mystery/romance, and the sex scenes are quite explicit.

I like to listen to Audio books as I'm going to sleep, as well as in the car or on my way to work. I would skip over the sex scenes if I felt uncomfortable in those locations.

I can imagine listening to erotica at night. I don't know how well it would sell, as I can only speak from personal experience, and I haven't actually purchased any.

I think it would sell just fine though, it's convenience.

There's one epub out there who regularly releases in audio format. I've tried listening to snippets but it just makes me laugh, especially when the voice does nothing to turn me on.

AW. A very nice place!
... masturbation causes blindness as they say. So it definitely would make sense to release erotic titles in audio so visually impaired fans of the genre could still appreciate the stories.

just kiddin' ;-)

I personally don't like audio books at all. Just not my thing, and I definitely would not buy an erotic audiobook. I prefer to read a real book, feel it in my hands. I am often reading around other people, and even though it might come in handy at times (like making dinner...dangerous, but I can't stop myself), the wrong people will probably hear it. My kids are constantly around me.

The car is one place I can see people using audio books, but I need to concentrate on my driving. I would get too distracted, no matter what the book is.

A lot of people put Audio books on their iPOD, my brother does that all of the time. Does it while jogging.

I know they do, but I don't have an iPod, and I don't jog. When I exercise, I just play music from my PC. For me, that would be distracting as well. I like listening to music, it gets me pumped up. But I really don't pay attention to the words usually, so I would probably miss out on parts of the story.

Nope, when I read, I prefer no other distractions. I read all the time, while doing other things, out in public, tv on in the background, kids playing. But for me to really enjoy a story, to lose myself into it, I like to sit in a quiet room and just read. But I don't like being read to.
