I did a search and couldn't seem to find a thread devoted just to Fringe. (Mods, if there is such a thread - please merge this with it.)
Anyway, I picked up the first season of Fringe on Sunday. I'm about half way through it, most of that on Sunday. I found it's a lot better than I expected. Not sure why. I think I had seen a similar premise back in the late 90's/early 2000's that just didn't catch my interest. (Not the X-Files which I had seen, at least the first few seasons before I lost interest.)
John Noble's character, Walter, is funny. I think JN is having so much fun with playing the insane genius. Yes, the character is there mostly for comic relief as well as the scientific aspect. But I like the fact that it's generally intelligent humor, even if the on-going obsession with foods he hasn't had during his incarceration can get boring.
The one thing that did bother me was how Dawson and Broyles went from a mutual hate (due to her past investigation of some questionable activities he did) to a more comfortable, even friendly working relationship so quickly. I know they still butt heads due to their different working styles. It's not that or the fact that he only gives her information in drips and dribbles. (Probably done by the writers to keep Broyles character involved to the extent that he is.) On the other hand, the slow release of info is also most likely done so as not to overwhelm her and to protect his 'backers'.
