I just finished up a renga (collection of 100 haiku). Anybody have any suggestions of chapbook publishers to seek out or avoid?

A "Renga" is a collection of collaborative Japanese Poetry which may be of various lengths and which is fully discussed at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Renga, (including the fact that it may have originated in China).

As for Chapbook publishers, I'd recommend www.shadowpoetry.com which are limited to 40 pages, cost about $600, and are of extremely high quality. Mine include "A Mixed Bag, a collection of Haiku, Senryu, and Aphorisms", (107 Poems) and "They Ain't Dead Yet, a collection of Limericks" (102 Poems).

Good Luck.

Are you looking to self publish or find a small press? There are a ton of small press chapbook places out there that you could check out. $600 seems WAY to expensive to self publish a book of poetry. I did a quick google search for haiku chapbooks and found a ton of results for competitions which resulted in publication of a chapbook or small press publishers.

Casey, I may be doing them an injustice. The original Setup fee is $195 with a minimum of 25 copies which would cost $50. Mine were each 100 copies at a cost of $200. I also had a color cover that costs $25 for 25 copies color inserts which cost $25 and an ISBN # for $45 and shpping fees of $13 per 25 copies as well as an Online Bookstore Setup fee of $10 and I may be including my copyright fee of $55 on each book (although those were paid separately). I also had to pay $100 for typing for submitting in hardcopy rather than as an attachment,

My brother went with a company that was free but only gave 2 free copies and charged $17 for each finished book, with NO Royalties. Mine sell at $10 a book in their bookstore with a small profit ($2.50) for me in Royalties on each book.

I may have done better elsewhere but I've been satified with the results as the books really are high quality.

Publish America to be specific. The way they're set up, they don't have to charge a fee. They get it all. jrh

Yeah, I was kind of looking more for a small press. I don't know that I'm completely opposed to reading fees, but they seem kind of irksome.

You might check out these Small Press publishers at http://www.bing.com/search?q=Small+Press+Poetry+Book+Publishers&FORM=QSRE1 or http://www.bing.com/search?q=Small+Press+Poetry+Book+Publishers&FORM=QSRE1 or http://www.duotrope.com/ but don't get your hopes too high. I swore I'd never go vanity but I'm proud of what Shadow Poetry produced and I've entered both of my chapbooks into best of 2009 contests (one by the Haiku Society of America and one by Writers Digest) and have high hopes they can gain wider attention there. jrh
