Hello, I am new to the forum and to writing in general. Most of my life I have been too lazy to write much, but in the past couple of years events in my life have given me a determination to research and write about my past.

I wanted to give some information on the book I am starting on to get some opinions on the likelihood of its success. I realize this largely depends on my effort and writing ability, but want to make sure that it is not a waste of time due to the masses of books in competition in the market. Well, here goes.

The book is about my life and the effects my father had on it. When I was seven, my dad drowned my mother in the bathtub of our house in order to get life insurance money. He got away with it and I thought she just slipped in the tub. Shortly after her funeral, he started dating my best friend’s mother who lived across the street. They married, and we moved to a bigger house. Two years later, he strangled her and buried her in the backyard. A year later the body was found and he was sent to prison for the rest of his life.

After this, I was sent to live with my father’s parents. Even though he was in prison, he continued telling us he was innocent, and we believed him. I never talked about my past with anyone, and let my anger and sadness build up inside for many years. About 13 years after he was sent to prison, I finally built up the courage to ask him the questions I was suppressing for so long. Within a few days, he wrote back 25 pages explaining the truth, or at least part of it.

Not only did he murder my mother and stepmother, but he had been controlling many members of his family and their friends for years by pretending to channel spirits and giving them instructions. He was very cunning and manipulative. Before my mother’s death, he convinced one of her aunts to commit suicide in order to get life insurance. Also, virtually everything that my father told me as a child about himself turned out to be false.

It seems that most of his behavior stemmed from the fact that he was born gay but brought up in a Christian town and household where that was considered an abomination. He concealed his true feelings from everyone around him, never telling anyone, including his friends or parents.

After reading the letter, I became fascinated, and started contacting everyone involved in his past life. I have many letters written by him, the accounts of several people who attended his supernatural sessions, and letters and recordings of people who knew him.

I have read several books on writing proposals, but I’m not certain there is a wide enough market for my subject. Can anyone give me some feedback? I appreciate any opinions, good or bad.

My first thought was that you were proposing to write a novel based loosely on this story. There's more than enough here for an interesting novel. When I realized that you were proposing a non-fiction book, I couldn't help but wonder, too, if there would be a large enough market for it.

But it might make one hell of a novel. ;)

Thanks for your comment Qby, I never really thought of turning it into a novel. Perhaps I should just write it for personal use instead of for publishing. Any other suggestions?

My personal opinion is that everyone has a life story. If you were famous, it would make it more interesting. If you do, try to put some life lessons in there. Stories like these really have to give hope, courage, new perspectives to be successful.

I always knew my life story would be a memoir. I needed to come clean, and heal and that was the way I went, but everyone is different. I was told by one family member I am airing my dirty laundry. But I cleaned it first by telling and healing, then I can air it.

It sounds like a heck of a story as a memoir, but they are tricky. First of all, you need to write it and finish it, just like a novel. Memoirs are non-fiction, of course, but usually handled like fiction in terms of submission requirements to agents. They don't usually work on a proposal. It's also not enough to have a great story (and this is pretty out there) but you have to be able to write it in such a way that a.) you demonstrate writing ability and b.) it has broad appeal. Unless, as already pointed out, you are a celebrity, in which case you are already considered to have a platform and of course a fan base to buy your book.

A memoir should have a theme and a resolution, or message. It can't just be a rambling account of your life and then he went to prison THE END. How did this shape you? What happened as a result of this? Did you have any dramatic shifts in your own life after you found out the truth? Or other questions that only you can answer. It has to be bigger than you, and take it out of the self-absorbed mode that we would all remain in if we didn't think bigger picture.

BTW, the only part of your explanation that brought me up short was the sentence about your father being "born gay" and raised in a Christian household as the reason a person would become a serial killer. If you attempt to look at this angle, make sure you look at it non-judgmentally and with fresh eyes.

I really think this is a fascinating story and not the usual story of childhood abuse, hated my father and mother, etc. It could be really powerful if told the right way, giving insight into how lives built on lies turned out - for all of you. It doesn't necessarily have to give hope to others, or show how well you turned out - after all, how many others would be in this same, unbelievable situation? But it should transcend your own experience.

Best of luck.

Thanks for all the replies.

Bluestone, the reason he became a serial killer wasn't because he was gay, it was because he kept a fundamental part of himself secret from everyone, thus creating a facade to the outside world. I may have made it sound different in my first post. The psychopathic mindset is very complex and not well understood, one of the reasons I want to go to graduate school for computational neuroscience.

Also, the way I have it outlined, I would start from the beginning of my life, the middle would be where I received the 25 page letter (I was planning on putting the whole letter in as it's own chapter), then the last few chapters would be my research, how I processed the information and overcame my psychological flaws to move on with the future. Again, thank you for your feedback.

True crime is a great market.

It's not a genre I know well from a writer's perspective, but I've read a lot of it. Ann Rule is the best. Her stories are just amazing. One of the things you'll notice is that she always highlights a hero--maybe a lawyer or police person or doctor or survivor--so you have someone to root for.

There can be lots of interesting takes on true crime. I remember a book from the 80s--Crossed Over by Beverly Lowry--written after the author's son has died in a car accident and she becomes fascinated with a convicted killer.

In the wilds of Texas. Actually, the liberal oasi
I second the support for this as a memoir, I think it would be fascinating. A lot will depend on the writing and I'd encourage you to study the craft of writing, read tons of books (memoirs, true crime, and fiction, too) and then put it all down on paper.

I note you call him a serial killer: from what you've told us (maybe there's more) I'm not sure he qualifies. The FBI, and most other, require three killings (don't think the aunt would count, as persuading someone to kill themselves isn't murder).

That aside, if you write with a theme in mind, as others have suggested, I see a runaway best-seller.

Thanks, Emily, for the suggestion, I will have to read some true crime.

MarkEsc, I guess if you don’t count his aunt as a murder, he wouldn’t qualify as a serial killer, but he is on most serial killer lists on websites. Either way, I think that if he wasn’t caught, he probably would have killed others. Thank you for the comment; I have a lot of reading to do.
