heroine pushed into training/combat?

In my experience, it's usually the opposite. usually she is stepping outside the norm and using her power in order to make a living in a man's world, OR, would like to use her power but is not appreciated/believed by those around her.

I'm sure they exist but I haven't seen/read any that I recall

Have you read the FEVER series by Karen Marie Moning? The heroine starts out as a girly, cutesy college-student who finds out she can see fairies (not the nice kind of fairies, either). She is then trained by a mysterious guy to use her powers, and she has to harden up along the way and resists pretty much the entire time of the first book.

It's a really fabulous series. Not exactly romance - definitely urban fantasy - but I think it would be a great one for you to look at.

Saving the world is easy for a superhero-unless you're a fraud.

Jo Tanis is a superhero, fighting evil on the city streets, using her ability to feed off electromagnetic energy and fire off charges-and it's all just a show. The Agency captures her and others like her when their powers begin to manifest, pitting them against each other in staged, gladiatorial fights. An explosive implant on the back of her neck assures she'll keep right on smiling for the camera and beating up the bad guys.

When Earth comes under attack, suddenly the show becomes deadly real. Unable to deal with a real alien, the -supers- are falling in droves. Millions of innocent civilians are going to die-unless Jo can cobble together a team from among the fake heroes and villains the Agency enslaved. Including Hunter, who not only promises to show her how to deactivate the implants, but seems to know more than he should about how the mysterious Agency operates.

Forcing a rag-tag bunch of former enemies to work together is the least of Jo's problems. The trick is determining if Hunter is friend or foe-and becoming the hero everyone thought she was before the world is destroyed for real.

It's true, it's true. I might have possibly read all 4 books in the past few weeks and loved every one of them.

Try the first season of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

I don't know of any books like this other than the Fever books, which have already been mentioned (and which I highly recommend by the way) but I would definitely read something like this.

I have an idea for a story about a woman who is forced to train as an assassin and has a serious problem with it. No magic or special powers, though. (And at the rate I'm going it will be years before I get around to trying to write it.)

So I'd be real interested in seeing someone tackle something like this.

Epic series I've read the whole thing, it's great, and totally follows the whole 'forced into training' thing.

I've never read this series, but it sounds like I need to.

Only warning I'd give - the fourth book ends on a frickin' killer cliffhanger. But the fifth & last will be out in January.

Oh! and other series! Keri Arthur's australian Paranormal Riley Jensen books.

Ten in total, all follow the story of Riley, a werewolf (and dhampire) who works for the directorate of other races as an office drone. She gets pushed into becoming a 'guardian' - who tracks down non-human killers.


It's very enjoyable!
