Thanks - I had forgotten Procopius.

Alas, I'm looking for that kind of information on the northern barbarians, specifically Angles and Saxons.

I'd be interested in what you find, Zornhau. Could you please post once you've done the research? I have a short trunked in which Angle hair-colour formed part of the premise. I did some basic research but suspect you're going deeper.

Have you checked Tacitus? I know he's a bit early, and I can't remember how many of the various tribes he discusses, but that seems like something he would write about in the same vein as this quote from one of my sourcebooks:

Who the first inhabitants of Britain were, whether natives or immigrants, remains obscure; one must remember we are dealing with barbarians. But physical characteristics vary, and that very variation is suggestive. The reddish hair and large limbs of the Caledonians proclaim a German origin, the swarthy faces of the Silures, the tendency of their hair to curl and the fact that Spain lies opposite, all lead one to believe that Spaniards crossed in ancient times and occupied the land. The peoples nearest to the Gauls are correspondingly like them.
