Let's say that I plan on selling my own books at a book fair, or convention, or a book signing, etc...Is a sale tax permit needed?

Not only is sales tax required, but a business license or sales license may also be required, depending on local and or state regulations.

You are required to report this as revenue you know...

My X wife and her friend got into trouble at a craft fair selling ceramics for not having a business license or tax permit in the state of Virginia. We got it all straightened out by applying for both before the next craft fair, but we had to stop selling at that particular fair.

Selling books from the trunk of your car or at fairs, signings, etc is no different... The only exception I could see is if the signing are at a book store and they take the money then they charge the tax and handle all the reports.

Again, depending on local and or state regulations...

I tried selling trading cards at some local comic shows in Minnesota and the organizers of the shows required state and federal tax ID numbers when I registered. Also having worked on a couple concoms, they also required dealers to have state and federal numbers; if not, no table in the dealers' room. Definitely check to make sure you have all your ducks in a row beforehand.

Hey, thanks to all. That's what I figured, but I was hoping that someone said, "Heck, no, not needed". But, I knew better.

Well, technically speaking, sales tax is only due ONCE. So if you paid sales tax when you purchased the books, then no, you do not need to charge customers. If you got the books at author price with no sales tax involved, then yes, you'll owe.

If he bought at author price plus sales tax, he still owes sales tax on the difference.

Yeah, I'm talking in terms of author discounted books. Looks like I'll be applying for a permit at some point in time. Thanks. Also, I'm guessing that if I go to an out of state conference and sell books, that the state of Texas permit wouldn't apply and I'd have to apply for a permit from that particular state.
