(I couldn't easily write erotica into my writing.)

I was really impressed (an intimidated) when I came to AW and discovered the quality erotica markets and writing and writers. sooo, mostly just curious after looking in your windows,

I write mostly fantasy, and at this point, it's mostly historical fantasy. But all of my stories have steamy sex. I have written a few erotic short stories, and am working on a couple of erotic novellas, but I think my natural groove lies in fantasy.

I don't write erotica, to begin with. I just don't pull the curtain on sex, except in a few cases like when it involves minors. I write mainstream/contemporary and a bit of fantasy.

No, I started off with sci-fi. It took me quite a while to make my first move towards erotica.

I started with suspense and short mystery, but as the mystery-suspense market for short stories all but winked out of existence (the remaining two are kind of Murder, She Wrote while my interests are more Se7en), I tried my hand at erotica in the form of fanfic. It was extremely well received, so I tried it without anybody else's characters. I liked it. Some of it's sold. More sits on my hard drive, awaiting the day I'm more confident of its quality.

did you (or do you) write other genres?

I wrote fantasy for many years, and dabbled in a few other genres. I decided on a whim to write an erotic romance for NaNoWriMo '08, and I was hooked.

do you mix your erotica and other genre writing?

Sometimes. I have an erotic fantasy on the back burner, and I've thought about doing some historical eventually. For the most part, though, it's contemporary. I do also write some SFF and I've got a literary novel in there somewhere, but they're generally pretty light on erotic content. Not by design, just works out that way.

Could you easily tailor your erotica to genre requests?

I'm not sure exactly what you mean by this.

In general, I write according to what the characters demand and what I need to tell the story. If someone asked me to tone down the sex or heat it up, I'd have to consider it on a case by case basis. I did have one editor ask me to remove a particular sex scene, and we finally agreed it still needed to happen, but was okay happening off-camera. The scene itself is gone, but it's still mentioned and the emotional impact is still there (the emotional impact had more to do with the fact that it happened than anything I needed to show during the scene). Just depends on what needs to be added/subtracted and why.

did you (or do you) write other genres?
Yep, started out in fantasy (sword and sorcery stuff, not really my thing to write though), then romance, then urban fantasy. Whatever I write, I have sex in it, though I haven't written straight erotica.

do you mix your erotica and other genre writing?
See above

do you write erotic _______ (scifi, history, etc.)?
I have written stories without explicit sex scenes, or sex that happened off camera...but every story I have written had romance in it, so sex was at least implied if not seen.

Could you easily tailor your erotica to genre requests?
Depends on the story. If it calls for sex, I write it. If I don't think the scene needs to be on the page, I can fade out. But I don't write sex for the sake of sex. There has to be a reason for it.

i guess it sounds so author-mill. like take any plot any make it sexy. but it's more the reverse of myself. I couldn't wrap my head around writing a sexy story or scene. i wonder if it's like a chicken-egg thing.

can you write sexy stories (erotica is your genre) in any genre or are you kind of fitted to your genre but you happen to write erotically? (poor, double edged wording i know)

also I feel like romance and erotica writers SEEM to have more titles under their belts than other genre. I guess it's because readers will mow through those books more quickly.

I write erotica because I find it interesting how sex affects people, so the sex is a natural part of the stories. I couldn't force the sex into a story any more than I could force it out.

I don't limit myself to any genre. If a story wants to be SFF, then it is. If it wants to be contemporary, then it is. And if it does - or doesn't - want to be erotic, I write it accordingly.

also I feel like romance and erotica writers SEEM to have more titles under their belts than other genre. I guess it's because readers will mow through those books more quickly.

I can't speak for anyone else, but I write romance and erotica faster than I write other genres mostly because it doesn't require the world-building, background info, etc., that my SFF stuff does. That's why I picked romance for NaNoWriMo in the first place. That's not to say I just throw together a romance or that it's easy, it just - for me - doesn't require as much prep work as other genres. I'm a fast writer anyway...the actual writing of my SFF novel was progressing just as quickly as any of my romances until I hit a problem area that has required me to step back and do some more research/planning.

The vast majority of my paid writing is non-fiction - gaming journalism.

I want to write science fiction, but the stuff that comes out of my hands appears to be erotic romance. Sometimes erotic paranormal romance.

Or, I was just told, regular romance with a lot of explicit sex scenes.

I've had a bad two months in general, and I no longer ask questions. When I have my mojo back, I'm going to ask about that ;) I worry about regular romance readers picking up my next book and having their eyebrows singed off.

I have attempted to tailor my stories to a particularly juicy looking call for submissions, and failed every time. I've also tried shaving them to fit a particular marketing category and the results were unacceptable. The stories are what they are. Maybe when I have more experience I can do a better job writing to order. Who knows.

did you (or do you) write other genres?
Yup. Mostly sci-fi and fantasy. Actually my first stories (from when I was a kid) were mysteries. But I suck at writing mysteries that are more than a page long so I switched to speculative fiction.

do you mix your erotica and other genre writing?
Sometimes. More like I mix my other genres into erotica. I can't seem to write everyday life erotica to save my life. (Well, aside from really short stuff.)

do you write erotic _______ (scifi, history, etc.)?
These days there's a bit of the erotic in just about everything I write. But there isn't always all out sex. (Since I firmly believe that erotica doesn't have to include sex in order to arouse.)

Could you easily tailor your erotica to genre requests?
I don't know about easily. But I've been working on several fantasy ideas, plus two steampunk novels that are pretty much erotica. (Though not so much erotic romance. Since Romance is another thing I suck at.)

I started out in porn. I wrote a script for a movie that won awards. One was Sexiest screenplay.

Everything I write now is filth, no matter what genre. I write memoir, romance and erotica

>did you (or do you) write other genres?
I usually write science fiction and/or fantasy

>do you mix your erotica and other genre writing?
It tends to creep in, yes. Most of the time, those scenes get moved to their own folder labeled "hentai"

>do you write erotic _______ (scifi, history, etc.)?
Yeah, I did write one science fiction... um, novel. With plenty of steamy scenes. There's still a lot of internal debate over whether it should keep those scenes or not.

>Could you easily tailor your erotica to genre requests?
I don't write to request. But considering how the porn creeps in, I suppose I could.

I write erotic romance mostly, but have dabbled with a few eroticas to offer as free-reads. I write just about everything, but have only persued publication with my erotic romances thus far. I plan to expand (using a different alias) into paranormal suspense, sci-fi and non-erotic romance and even children's books ( I wrote one with my oldest daughter, who just turned 11)

>I suppose I should make a joke about the dangers of shaking hands in this forum,

Let me try that second part again:

...but I'll probably screw up the joke and then forget to shake hands.

So, yeah, not the most socially graceful. I'm sure I'm in good company.

did you (or do you) write other genres?
The first thing I wrote started out as a paranormal romance that kept getting steamier and steamier. LOL

do you mix your erotica and other genre writing?
So far, it's been various sub-genres of romance but it's still steamy.

do you write erotic _______ (scifi, history, etc.)?
I'd like to tackle SF, haven't done it yet.

Could you easily tailor your erotica to genre requests?
Only if I like the genre and understand it. Any tailoring (I've done so far) has been a fail when I hit the parts I don't understand well.

Urban Fantasy.

Could you easily tailor your erotica to genre requests?
Nope. It always has to be fantasy. :)

Could you easily tailor your erotica to genre requests?

I mostly write literary.

do you mix your erotica and other genre writing?

I use erotic scenes wherever I deem necessary, regardless of genre.

(i just write mundane or near future scifi)

If that's what the story wants to be, sure.

Could you easily tailor your erotica to genre requests?
(I couldn't easily write erotica into my writing.)

I can't even tailor my genre stuff to genre requests.
