How much per month does it cost to rent a self-storage garage, like the ones sized for a car or so and where they have maybe a dozen units in a single, long building?

I rented one about half that size for about $50/month. So I'd guess probably $75/mo for the size you're thinking of. A 30-second phone call will answer your question definitively.
true, but looking to ballpark it for small-town norther Wisconsin, 1989-ish.
so I'm gonna take your figure and say $40/month back then and in the sticks, for a yearly rate of $580, unless someone says that's way off.....
A lot of storage places offer one month free or something similar. I don't know if that's important for your story.

In the mid 80"s I paid about $98 for a 10x20 storage unit in the Northern Va/DC Metro area. Today, the same units are going for $190 or more. It also depends on if the storage facility is a small mom and pop operation or a large corporate operation.
I know a lady from Hawaii that was paying $100 a month for a 5x5 storage about 10 years ago. I told her that was crazy because you can get them around here for about $50 per month. She said everything in Hawaii is more expensive.
