I read this from an author on another forum and thought it was great so I'm sharing it with you:

One thought that occurred to me was to just read my book on the tube very visibly, exclaiming 'Christ, this is brilliant!' every now and then. Perhaps I could get out of work actors to do the same thing. Don't know how I'd pay them though. I could say I was doing some sort of experimental theatre thing and see if they'd do it for nothing. Mind you, it doesn't have to be actors. Hmmm. Any volunteers?

Maybe we could do that with each other's books? ;)
Any other original ideas?

Visit every book store you can with stickers brandishing your book image and your signature so that when the book store receives your books they can stick those stickers inside the books and claim that have copies signed by the author. Get to know the industry, and send out postcards, drink coasters, and a number of other stuff. Konrath has some suggestions beginning on page 44 of September 2005's issue of Writer's Digest. Includes fliers, magazine writes, websites, book expos, book signings, meet people, shake hands, and sell sell sell.
