First of all, hello, it's been a long time since I posted here. I got some helpful comments from some excerpts I posted awhile back (couple years ago, I think).
I recently self-published my novel in e-formats (kindle, epub, etc.) and I'm sitting down to collect info and decide on a plan of self-advertising. One of the pushes I want to start with is an island audience. My story is urban fantasy, but several characters are from Hawaii and part of the book takes place there.
While it gives a taste of life in Hawaii for the average reader, I think kama'ainas would get a kick out of seeing heroes who are just like them, who grew up just like them, and talk and behave alot like them.
I'm not a fan of message boards (not that I see anything wrong with them, I just don't spend much time online for anything social beyond email) so I only know of a few good resources like AW. But I wondered if anyone is part of groups or knows some good sites where local authors have discussions just to get a feel for how they do things, if there's anything unique to finding an audience in the 50th state. I don't live there anymore but I still visit family, so I'm thinking about visiting local book stores to see if it would be worth doing a small print run.
Any ideas would be appreciated, Mahalos!
