Hi,

I just sent off a few queries for my children's novel but am now wondering if I have incorrectly labeled it as fantasy. How much fantasy does a novel need to have in order for it to be defined as such? And what is the difference between that and magical realism?

My book takes place in a normal town in the present, but some of the characters have special powers. These have nothing to do with magic.

Thanks :)

That's fantasy or sci-fi. Magic Realism is more...well, it's hard to explain. But usually "special powers" fall into fantasy/paranormal/etc.

Is there something fantastic--something not found in science or the real world in the book? Congrats, it can qualify as Fantasy. Subgenre is best left to agents to sort out.
