ala Carlos Ruiz Zafon's The Shadow of the Wind. I've read Zafon's Angel's Game, and I'm currently reading Ishiguro's Never Let Me Go because I heard it was mystery-esque. I want more literary mysteries! Bonus points if they have some supernatural elements and/or are set in the past, but realistic contemporary is ok too! To be clear, I am not looking for detective/crime novels. Thanks so much.

Haruki Murakami.

Not mysteries, per se, but mysterious and supernatural (tending toward magical realism rather than fantasy).

I'm not sure if I dare to recommend them, but a few books come to my mind:

Tough Guys Don't Dance by Norman Mailer
Diary by Chuck Palahniuk
The Name of the Rose by Umberto Eco
