New Emachine, seems slow

I'm sure it came with tons of junk on it that I can get rid of. For years we have built our own pcs using New Egg etc...but they all have problems and I can'f afford anything else. So please, I know, Emachines stink.

It's got Win 7, AmD athlong le 1640 proc, vidia GeForce (?), 500 GB Hdd, 2 BG DDR memory. How can I speed it up a little for just general web browing? Anyone familiar with stuff you can always delete on a new pc?

How do you build a computer? I want a netbook and it seems that because of how frigging expensive they are, I am going to have to build one of my own. :censored

You buy everything from the tower to the motherboard from a website and when the pieces all come, you put it all together. I didn't do it, my hubby did. We needed three powerful pc's to play World Of Warcraft on and the store ones wouldn't be good enough in many cases. So for $400 he built them..or should I say put them together from new parts?

What antivirus does it have? Norton and McAfee are both gigantic resource hogs. If you have either one, you could look into switching to one of the many free antivirus programs. They're often just as good (sometimes better) and usually use far fewer resources to run.

Also, run an adware/malware scan. You'd be surprised how much crap they put on machines before they even make it out of the manufacturing plant.

Ditto on AV, see if you're stuck with a big sucker

maybe get more RAM -- 2GB is minimal

Building a netbook is very much a non-trivial project; it requires parts that aren't readily available, and it's quite complex to work in their very tiny spaces.

Do you have the Windows install DVDs? I'd reinstall from scratch to make sure there's no pre-installed crap left.

Most people only build desktops. Building a laptop of any sort is much tougher, and not recommended for the lay techie.

Uninstall all of the E-Machine friendly 'Take the tour!' carp and any software updates except for those coming directly from Microsoft. Also, any extras like Norton will absolutely kill the processor speed. I was able to tweak a used E-Machine to meet my needs until I could afford to buy something faster and better.
